1981-1986 - Study of Physics and Mathematics at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Cologne.
1987 - PhD in Theoretical Biophysics at the Technical University of Munich. Advisor: Prof. Klaus Schulten at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.
1991-1994 - Project leader "Neural Networks in Process Automation" at Corporate Technologies of Siemens AG.
1994-1996 - Assistant of the Executive Board Member R&D, Siemens AG.
1996-1999 - Associate Professor at the Institute for Neuroinformatics of the University of Bochum.
1997-1999 - Managing Director and Partner of the ZN GmbH, leading face recogniton company.
since 1999 - Full professor and Director of the Institute for Neuro- und Bioinformatics, University of Lübeck.
2004-2006 - Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Sciences of the University of Lübeck.
2006-2008 - Vice-Rector of the University of Lübeck.
