1981-1986 - Study of Physics and Mathematics at the Technical University of Munich and the  University of Cologne.

1987 - Diploma Thesis in Theoretical Biophysics at the Technical University of Munich.

PhD Thesis, Advisor: Prof. Klaus Schulten at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.

1991-1994 - Project leader "Neural Networks in Process Automation" at Corporate Technologies of Siemens AG.

1994-1996 - Assistant of the Executive Board Member R&D, Siemens AG.

1996-1999 - Associate Professor at the Institute for Neuroinformatics of the University of Bochum.

1997-1999 - Managing Director and Partner of the Center for Neuroinformatics GmbH (now L-1 Identity Solutions AG), Bochum

since 1999 - Full professor and Director of the Institute for Neuro- und Bioinformatics, University of Lübeck.
