abstract = {Summary Sleep is able to contribute not only to memory consolidation, but also to post-sleep learning. The notion exists that either synaptic downscaling or another process during sleep increase post-sleep learning capacity. A correlation between augmentation of the sleep slow oscillation and hippocampal activation at encoding support the contribution of sleep to encoding of declarative memories. In the present study, the effect of closed-loop acoustic stimulation during an afternoon nap on post-sleep encoding of two verbal (word pairs, verbal learning and memory test) and non-verbal (figural pairs) tasks and on electroencephalogram during sleep and learning were investigated in young healthy adults (N = 16). Closed-loop acoustic stimulation enhanced slow oscillatory and spindle activity, but did not affect encoding at the group level. Subgroup analyses and comparisons with similar studies lead us to the tentative conclusion that further parameters such as time of day and subjects' cognitive ability influenced responses to closed-loop acoustic stimulation.},

  abstract = {The quality of radiographs is of major importance for diagnosis and treatment planning. While most research regarding automated radiograph quality assessment uses technical features such as noise or contrast, we propose to use anatomical structures as more appropriate features. We show that based on such anatomical features, a modular deep-learning framework can serve as a quality control mechanism for the diagnostic quality of ankle radiographs. For evaluation, a dataset consisting of 950 ankle radiographs was collected and their quality was labeled by radiologists. We obtain an average accuracy of 94.1%, which is better than the expert radiologists are on average.}

abstract = {We present a biologically inspired algorithm for key-point detection based on multi-layer and nonlinear centersurround inhibition. A Bag-of-Visual-Words framework is used to evaluate the performance of the detector on the Oxford III-T Pet Dataset for pet recognition. The results demonstrate an increased performance of our algorithm compared to the SIFT key-point detector. We further improve the recognition rate by separately training codebooks for the ON- and OFF-type key points. The results show that our key-point detection algorithms outperform the SIFT detector by having a lower recognition-error rate over a whole range of different key-point densities. Randomly selected key-points are also outperformed.},

abstract = {<p>Patients with hemispatial neglect are severely impaired in orienting their attention to contralesional hemispace. Although motion is one of the strongest attentional cues in humans, it is still unknown how neglect patients visually explore their moving real-world environment.</p> <p>We therefore recorded eye movements at bedside in 19 patients with hemispatial neglect following acute right hemisphere stroke, 14 right-brain damaged patients without neglect and 21 healthy control subjects. Videos of naturalistic real-world scenes were presented first in a free viewing condition together with static images, and subsequently in a visual search condition. We analyzed number and amplitude of saccades, fixation durations and horizontal fixation distributions. Novel computational tools allowed us to assess the impact of different scene features (static and dynamic contrast, colour, brightness) on patients{\textquoteright} gaze.</p> <p>Independent of the different stimulus conditions, neglect patients showed decreased numbers of fixations in contralesional hemispace (ipsilesional fixation bias) and increased fixation durations in ipsilesional hemispace (disengagement deficit). However, in videos left-hemifield fixations of neglect patients landed on regions with particularly high dynamic contrast. Furthermore, dynamic scenes with few salient objects led to a significant reduction of the pathological ipsilesional fixation bias. In visual search, moving targets in the neglected hemifield were more frequently detected than stationary ones. The top-down influence (search instruction) could neither reduce the ipsilesional fixation bias nor the impact of bottom-up features.</p> <p>Our results provide evidence for a strong impact of dynamic bottom-up features on neglect patients{\textquoteright} scanning behaviour. They support the neglect model of an attentional priority map in the brain being imbalanced towards ipsilesional hemispace, which can be counterbalanced by strong contralateral motion cues. Taking into account the lack of top-down control in neglect patients, bottom-up stimulation with moving real-world stimuli may be a promising candidate for future neglect rehabilitation schemes.</p>},

abstract = {Does it matter what observers are looking at right now to determine where they will look next? We recorded eye movements and computed colour, local orientation, motion, and geometrical invariants on dynamic natural scenes. The distributions of differences between features at successive fixations were compared with those from random scanpaths of varying similarity to natural scanpaths. Although distributions show significant differences, these feature correlations are mainly due to spatio-temporal correlations in natural scenes and a target selection bias, e.g. towards moving objects. Our results indicate that low-level features at fixation contribute little to the choice of the next saccade target.}

abstract= {Coupled threshold elements with self-inhibition display a phase transition to an oscillating state where the elements fire in synchrony with a period T that is of the order of the dead-time caused by self-inhibition. This transition is noise-activated and therefore displays strong collectively enhanced stochastic resonance. For an exponentially decaying distribution of dead-times the transition to the oscillating state occurs, coming from high noise temperatures, via a Hopf bifurcation and coming from low temperatures, via a saddle node bifurcation. The transitions can be triggered externally by noise and oscillating signals. This opens up new possibilities for controlling slow wave sleep.},

abstract = {Stabilization of instable periodic orbits of nonlinear dynamical systems has been a widely explored field theoretically and in applications. The techniques can be grouped into time-continuous control schemes based on Pyragas, and the two Poincaré-based chaos control schemes, Ott–Gebogi–Yorke (OGY) and difference control. Here, a new stability analysis of these two Poincaré-based chaos control schemes is given by means of the Floquet theory. This approach allows to calculate exactly the stability restrictions occurring for small measurement delays and for an impulse length shorter than the length of the orbit. This is of practical experimental relevance; to avoid a selection of the relative impulse length by trial and error, it is advised to investigate whether the used control scheme itself shows systematic limitations on the choice of the impulse length. To investigate this point, a Floquet analysis is performed. For OGY control the influence of the impulse length is marginal. As an unexpected result, difference control fails when the impulse length is taken longer than a maximal value that is approximately one half of the orbit length for small Ljapunov numbers and decreases with the Ljapunov number.}

abstract = {Flexible learning rates can lead to increased payoffs under the influence of noise. In a previous paper [Traulsen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 028701 (2004)], we have demonstrated this effect based on a replicator dynamics model which is subject to external noise. Here, we utilize recent advances on finite population dynamics and their connection to the replicator equation to extend our findings and demonstrate the stochastic gain effect in finite population systems. Finite population dynamics is inherently stochastic, depending on the population size and the intensity of selection, which measures the balance between the deterministic and the stochastic parts of the dynamics. abstract = {The rule 150 cellular automaton is a remarkable discrete dynamical system, as it shows 1/f alpha spectra if started from a single seed [J. Nagler and J. C. Claussen, Phys. Rev. E 71, 067103 (2005)]. Despite its simplicity, a feasible solution for its time behavior is not obvious. Its self-similarity does not follow a one-step iteration like other elementary cellular automata. Here it is shown how its time behavior can be solved as a two-step vectorial, or string, iteration, which can be viewed as a generalization of Fibonacci iteration generating the time series from a sequence of vectors of increasing length. This allows us to compute the total activity time series more efficiently than by simulating the whole spatiotemporal process or even by using the closed expression. The results are further extended to the generalization of rule 150 to the two-dimensional case and to Bethe lattices and the relation to corresponding integer sequences is discussed.}

abstract = {Coevolutionary dynamics is investigated in chemical catalysis, biological evolution, social and economic systems. The dynamics of these systems can be analyzed within the unifying framework of evolutionary game theory. In this Letter, we show that even in well-mixed finite populations, where the dynamics is inherently stochastic, biodiversity is possible with three cyclic-dominant strategies. We show how the interplay of evolutionary dynamics, discreteness of the population, and the nature of the interactions influences the coexistence of strategies. We calculate a critical population size above which coexistence is likely.},

This paper investigates a minimal version of the Current-Burst model with Aging of F\"oll and Carstensen and demonstrates for a restricted geometry that the Aging concept is essential for underetching, or cavity generation. If the influence of Aging is neglected, the dynamics reduces to a Random Etching Model similar to the Random Deposition model. This computer {\sl gedanken experiment} demonstrates that the stochastic dynamics with ageing-dependent kinetic reaction probabilities accounts for the different etching morphologies compared to those obtained in surface roughening and related systems.}

abstract = {A vast variety of biological, social, and economical networks shows topologies drastically differing from random graphs; yet the quantitative characterization remains unsatisfactory from a conceptual point of view. Motivated from the discussion of small scale-free networks, a biased link distribution entropy is defined, which takes an extremum for a power-law distribution. This approach is extended to the node–node link cross-distribution, whose nondiagonal elements characterize the graph structure beyond link distribution, cluster coefficient and average path length. From here a simple (and computationally cheap) complexity measure can be defined. This offdiagonal complexity (OdC) is proposed as a novel measure to characterize the complexity of an undirected graph, or network. While both for regular lattices and fully connected networks OdC is zero, it takes a moderately low value for a random graph and shows high values for apparently complex structures as scale-free networks and hierarchical trees. The OdC approach is applied to the Helicobacter pylori protein interaction network and randomly rewired surrogates.}

abstract = {Thalamic circuits are able to generate state-dependent oscillations of different frequencies and degrees of synchronization. However, little is known about how synchronous oscillations, such as spindle oscillations in the thalamus, are organized in the intact brain. Experimental findings suggest that the simultaneous occurrence of spindle oscillations over widespread territories of the thalamus is due to the corticothalamic projections, as the synchrony is lost in the decorticated thalamus. In this Letter we study the influence of corticothalamic projections on the synchrony in a thalamic network, and uncover the underlying control mechanism, leading to a control method which is applicable for several types of oscillations in the central nervous system.},
